Hi my name is Rob Barber from Bodyboard Holidays, Bodyboard school and the Bodyboard depot and today I am going to talk to you about late take offs into the barrel and successfully making them and coming out of them.

The first thing is when you are paddling for a wave which is very steep and going to be a late take off, the common misconception is that you just wait and drop into it.

You don’t, you need to paddle into it with speed and determination and positivity that you are going to make it.

When you are under the lip and it is just coming over you, kick as fast as you can and as quickly as you can, get your weight over that inside rail and pull up on the nose slightly and apply pressure down through your shoulder into your elbow.

This is very similar to the advice that I gave you for the scoop but the main difference is that as that lip comes over you there will be a shockwave inside the barrel produced by that lip imploding on the waves trough.

Now if you are not careful it will push you up into the roof of the barrel so it is really important that you look, lean and lunge and drive on that rail and really focus on getting out of that barrel.

Now any experienced barrel rider will tell you that you always aim up in the barrel and try and come out at the top of the hole because barrels are generally a bit like telescopes, they will get smaller towards the end so you need to aim for the highest point of the barrel.

Look, lean and lunge to get out of that hole and by allowing that lip to go under your board rail, it should push you out with the foam ball behind you and hopefully you get spat out of the barrel to epic cheers from the beach.
