Описание к видео The Vocabulary of Statistics – Terminology for Beginning Statistics (1-1)

Welcome to the study of statistics! We will begin with an introduction to some new terminology that we will be using in our adventure. I will introduce you to four goals of statistics (to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data), three meanings of the word “statistics” (practice, procedures, outcomes), and two types of statistics (descriptive and inferential). You will learn about samples and populations, and some terms like parameter, mean, standard deviation, and correlation. This will set a foundation for the terms and techniques that we will use throughout the course.

This video teaches the following topics and terminology:
Critical thinking
Data and datum
Collecting: measuring or quantifying the world
Organizing: structuring data to understand what they mean
Analyzing: interrogating the data to find out what they reveal about the world
Interpreting: telling the story we learned from the data
Statistics: the practice of doing statistics, the field or discipline
Statistics: mathematical procedures that we use to organize, summarize, and make sense of our data
Statistics: numbers obtained from the statistical procedures (such as means, standard deviations, correlation coefficients)
Population: all possible people who might be included in research
Sample: smaller subset of the people in the population
Parameters are numbers that characterize data from a population
Statistics are numbers that characterize data from a sample
Descriptive Statistics are procedures that organize and summarize a large amount of data (like mean and standard deviation)
Inferential Statistics are procedures used to draw conclusions about data or make predictions about values that are unknown
