Punjab Launches Interest-Free E-Taxi Scheme for Youth Employment & Clean Transport
In a major step toward environmental sustainability and youth employment, the Punjab government has officially finalized an ambitious E-Taxi Scheme that offers 1,100 electric taxis in its first phase. These taxis will be distributed on interest-free installments, allowing financially challenged individuals, especially the unemployed youth, to benefit from a clean, self-sustaining source of income.
This progressive initiative is part of the broader E-Taxi Program 2025, launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The goal is to gradually replace traditional fuel-based taxis with electric vehicles (EVs), promoting zero-emission transport while reducing pollution in urban centers like Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan.
At the core of the project is a government collaboration with Dewan Motors, which will supply locally assembled electric vehicles — namely the Honri VC20 and VC30 models. These EVs come with impressive ranges of 200 km and 300 km per charge, making them highly feasible for daily use in busy cities.
The scheme is carefully designed with social inclusivity in mind. The application process will be kept simple and accessible, ensuring that individuals from rural backgrounds, women, and persons with disabilities can all apply and benefit. The government is focusing on empowering groups often left out of economic opportunities.
To ensure smooth adoption, the Punjab government is also investing in a robust charging infrastructure. In Lahore, the plan is to install a charging station every 3 kilometers, making it extremely convenient for E-Taxi drivers to recharge and continue working without long downtimes. This infrastructure will soon expand to other cities and districts in Punjab.
During a recent high-level meeting chaired by Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, key issues like vehicle selection, installment payment structure, pricing model, and charging logistics were discussed in detail. The minister emphasized that this is not just a transportation upgrade — it’s a socio-economic reform initiative aimed at job creation, environmental preservation, and green innovation.
The official launch of the E-Taxi Scheme will be conducted through a public advertisement campaign in the coming weeks. Once live, it’s expected to transform urban mobility, reduce Punjab’s carbon footprint, and set an example for other provinces to follow.
This is a visionary step by the Punjab government, reflecting the global shift toward electric mobility and sustainable urban development. The scheme will not only benefit individuals who become taxi owners but also contribute to a cleaner environment for all citizens.
