On Monday, January 15, 2024, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Ballenger Lane in Palm Coast.

A little after 2 p.m., a caller contacted Flagler County Communications stating that Chance King, 20, was causing a disturbance at their home and was refusing to leave. King was currently on probation following a narcotics arrest from last April. While deputies were enroute to the address, King left in a black Ford Fusion.

Deputy Schmidt spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Pine Lakes Parkway South and Belle Terre Parkway, and recognized the driver as King. Deputy Schmidt continued to follow a short distance behind while waiting for a back-up to arrive with no emergency lights activated until King accelerated quickly onto Bayside Drive, driving recklessly with speeds reaching 80 miles per hour in the residential neighborhood.

King continued to speed and drive erratically, showing no regard for public safety while weaving in and out of lanes and running off the roadway, causing damage to his right passenger side bumper. Once he reached Belle Terre Parkway, he continued driving recklessly swerving in and out of traffic forcing numerous vehicles off the roadway.

In an attempt to stop the vehicle, Deputy Dorsey deployed stop sticks near Belle Terre Parkway and Buffalo Bill Drive. The stop sticks successfully deflated the rear passenger tire of King’s vehicle, but King continued to flee driving across Matanzas Woods Parkway onto Lakeview Boulevard and drove north on a dirt trail leading into a heavily wooded area, until he struck a large sand berm. King then jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot further into the woods. Deputies then chased him on foot and were able to take him into custody.

“This guy is no stranger to the Green Roof Inn and found himself right back there,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “He endangered many lives his feeble and foolish attempt to avoid justice. I commend our deputies for safely bringing this incident to a close.”
