In the 8th century, under the Chola King Vijayalaya, was a General named Neelaman. He was blessed with a son, who was named Neelan and was trained in all the martial arts. When Neelan turned 15, he was inducted in the Imperial Chola Army. He won many battles for the Chola Empire against the Pandyas, Kadambas, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas and the Cheras. He even won over the friendship of the Pallava Dynasty.
Pleased by his military prowess, the King bestowed upon him the title of Parakalan or Slayer of Foes, made him a General and gave away the province of Tirumangai Nadu or Aalinadu to Neelan to rule as a vassal. Neelan accepted the offer and ruled as a virtuous king.
At that time, in Tirumangai Nadu, there lived a beautiful maiden named Kumudhavalli. She was born in Tiruvellakulam in Tirumangai Nadu. King Neelan was impressed by her beauty and wished to marry her. The girl laid down two conditions. The first one was that she would marry only a Sri Vaishnava and second that he would have to feed 1000 brahmin devotees every day. The king was so awestruck by her beauty that he acceded to her conditions and married Kumudavalli.
Tirumangai Mannan, as promised to his wife Kumudavalli during marriage, feeds poor Brahmins every day. He also undertakes to build the walls of Srirangam Temple and engages in the renovation of some other Vaishnava temples. One day, the treasurer comes hurriedly and informs Tirumangai that the treasury will soon be empty. Tirumangai Mannan, along with 4 Ministers, plan to rob the rich travellers (Vazhipari Kollai), to continue with feeding the poor brahmins and do temple renovation works. One day, they try to rob Perumal & Thayar who are crossing the forest area dressed as a rich newly married couple. Tirumangai Mannan snatches all the jewels on the couple and what they are carrying, including trying to remove with his teeth the golden metti on HIS toe. But after collecting all the jewels, he and his Ministers are unable to lift the booty – even with their two hands. He asks Perumal for help, who lifts it easily with just one hand. Tirumangai Mannan accuses Perumal to have put some spell at not being able to lift the bounty. He scares him with a knife to lift the spell. Upon which Perumal imparts the “Ashtaksha Mandiram – Om Namo Narayana” Tirumangai Mannan’s ear. Tirumangai realises his mistake, falls at his feet, asks for forgiveness and transforms from an authoritative Neelan into a sublime Tirumangai Azhwar.
