Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted the end of the ongoing conflict should be reinforced with 'guaranteed security' during his speech at Independence Day celebrations in Kiev on Sunday.
"Together, Ukrainians and our partners, we are working to push Russia towards peace. And this is possible. Together we are working so that the end of this war means for Ukraine the attainment of guaranteed security, so that neither war nor the threat of war is left as a legacy to our children," he stated.
Zelensky was backed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who stressed that Western allies should provide 'strengthened' support for Ukraine at both this 'decisive' moment on the way to peace and after it is achieved.
"When this peace comes, we cannot simply trust and verify. Instead, we must deter and reinforce. We must deter Russia from any new attempts to threaten the freedom of Ukraine and Europe by strengthening the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," he said.
Carney announced that 'over one billion' of two billion dollars of military aid from his country would be used to fund 'drones, ammunition, and armoured vehicles', which are expected in September.
The statements come after US President Donald Trump hosted Zelensky and other European leaders in Washington on Monday, focusing on security guarantees for Ukraine - with the US president suggesting that the UK, France and Germany wanted to put 'boots on the ground' in Ukraine.
Later, Russia's Sergei Lavrov referred to security guarantees from the 2022 talks which would include all members of the UNSC, including Russia and China. Trump held landmark talks with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, announcing that the two leaders agreed on 'many points'. The Russian President said their talks could 'pave the path to peace' - and invited Trump to Moscow for their second meeting - before warning Kiev and the EU not to 'torpedo the progress'.
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, Zelensky led the awarding ceremony for military personnel and civilians. Several foreign officials were granted Ukrainian high orders, including US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg, Defence Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden Pal Jonson and German ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jager.
