This area is the Oldest & Largest Member Supported Conservation in the world.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a wild bird sanctuary located along the Appalachian flyway and used for migration purposes. Birds drifting south from Canada, New England and New York, are known to soar the slopes & length of the ridge, to conserve energy on their journey leading south.

As the world's first refuge for birds of prey, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary came to be after an amateur ornithologist named Richard Pough heard of mass shootings of birds of prey in the area for sport & to eliminate wildlife predators that included predatory birds. In 1931, he became one of a growing number of conservationists who disapproved of these shootings.

He took photographs of these events after visiting the Mountain that were later seen by Rosalie Edge, a conservation activist. Mrs Edge then came to Hawk Mountain and leased over 1400 acres of land and stopped the shootings and turned it into a sanctuary. The land was then purchased and deeded to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association.

We hike up to several overlooks and take in spectacular scenery.
