If your front hub has a modern sealed bearing cartridge then it must be replaced, otherwise a cup and cone design can be serviced. Take extra care not to loose any of the balls as they fall out of the hub when you open it up. When buying new balls, take the old ones to your local bike shop so you can exchange them with like-for-like replacements.

There are two types of fixing for a front wheel. Hexagonal nuts threaded on a solid axle, or a quick release skewer system that runs through the centre of a hollow axle.
