On November 20, 2024, the Master in Humanitarian Action and Peacebuilding (MAHAP) team hosted the inaugural session of the MAHAP Research Series, featuring alumnus Robert Örell who presented his MAHAP research: “Fateful moments in violent extremists´ disengagement and deradicalisation narratives”, examining the critical turning points that enable individuals to leave neo-Nazi and other violent extremist groups. Robert Örell, a leading expert in "Exit Work" who supports individuals leaving violent extremist movements. With over a decade as Program Director for Exit Sweden and extensive international experience across the US, Europe, and beyond, Robert brought unique insights from both academic research and frontline practice. The session also featured an in-depth conversation between Robert and his thesis supervisor, Dr Jon-Hans Coetzer (UNITAR), exploring the methodology, findings, and practical implications of this important research. The discussion revealed how "fateful moments", both agentic (choice-driven) and non-agentic (circumstantial), serve as catalysts for disengagement, highlighting the importance of individualized, multidisciplinary approaches to supporting former extremists. This webinar exemplified MAHAP's commitment to advancing knowledge in peacebuilding and humanitarian action through rigorous, practice-informed research. The series celebrates outstanding work by MAHAP graduates while demonstrating how the program bridges academic excellence with real-world impact.
