In this full-length lecture, Professor Jonathan Stalling introduces the core concepts that have made Classical Chinese poetry a cultural treasure and human resource for over 2,000 years. Stalling discusses the differences between translating Chinese poetry into English and composing Chinese poetry in English. He discusses how other languages came to write Chinese poetry (Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese), and how English can do so as well. The lecture then moves into not only the rules one must follow to compose a perfect "jueju" in English (the shortest genre of "Regulated Chinese Poetry"), but also what these rules meant at a deeper cultural level throughout Chinese history and into present.
