In 1942, after a considerable number of Destroyer Escorts (DE) were being constructed with the 3”/50 cal. gun, the Bureau of Ordnance noted that it was inferior to the 5”/38. They recommended that these ships were fitted with improved fire control directors.

These new directors were based on Lead Computing Gunsights. These were in high demand for all Navy Ships, including ones equipped with the 5”/38 gun. For Destroyer Escorts in the Atlantic, where the focus was on anti-submarine warfare, this wasn’t a high priority. This changed, in 1945, when DEs were transferred into the Pacific. Lacking the improved directors many ships still performed admirably. The 3”/50 Cal. proved to be an effective AA weapon,
