---------------------------
"Orcs Must Die 3" blends tower defence with third-person shooter mechanics, offering a chaotic but enjoyable Solo or online co-op experience. With two campaigns totalling 23 missions, the game can be completed in around 10 hours, but unlocking all upgraded weapons, traps and trinkets will take considerably longer.
The goal of the game is to prevent waves of orcs from entering a rift by strategically placing barricades and traps that force enemies into specific lanes and create kill zones. While the strategic placing of traps plays a large part in the strategy, early on they are a limited resource that will be overwhelmed. Players are therefore required to constantly monitor all attack paths and engage the enemies directly. Combat does have tactical elements too, whether you're thinning out groups of small enemies, targeting priority threats, or using crowd control and elemental effects to offset trap weaknesses.
However, there are a few issues. The majority of items are locked behind a slow upgrade path based on performance, and deciding what to unlock next must be done blindly, without any detailed specs. Some traps, too, are much better choices than others, but the game does feel well-balanced overall, even if an expert can cheese every level. As soon as a level begins, you're also locked into your 10-item loadout, which really limits combinations and experimentation. There's also no saving mid-game, with some levels taking over 30 minutes. The characters, too, are lackluster, and the story goes absolutely nowhere.
Overall, it's a very solid and fun tactical tower defense game, even if it leans much more toward an action shooter than previous installments.
