DOOM: The Dark Ages" is an upcoming first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, set to release on May 15, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. As a prequel to "DOOM (2016)" and "DOOM Eternal," this game plunges players into a dark, techno-medieval world where the Doom Slayer wages a brutal war against the forces of Hell. Unlike its predecessors, it ditches multiplayer to focus entirely on a sprawling single-player campaign—the largest in the series yet. Expect a cinematic origin story of the Slayer’s rage, blending savage combat with a grounded, strafe-heavy feel reminiscent of the original "DOOM," powered by the latest idTech engine. New weapons like the versatile Shield Saw, a skull-shredding flail, and a bone-crunching mace join classics like the Super Shotgun, while epic moments let you pilot a 30-story Atlan mech or soar on a cybernetic dragon, raining destruction on demon hordes. The game’s massive, sandbox-like levels invite exploration, from ruined castles to ancient hellscapes, all drenched in a dark fantasy/sci-fi vibe.


I was lucky enough to get my hands on "DOOM: The Dark Ages" early, and the gameplay I’m showing here is straight from my own session. Shredding demons with the Shield Saw, parrying attacks, and stomping through these medieval battlegrounds felt every bit as visceral and empowering as you’d hope—proof that the Slayer’s still got it, even centuries back in time.
