On February 12, 1963, a Boeing 720 from Northwest Airlines took off from Miami, Florida, when it encountered severe turbulence over the Everglades. Minutes later, amidst heavy rain and lightning, witnesses heard an explosion and saw a fireball descending from the clouds, plummeting at high speed.

Revealing the Truth of Flight 705: The Turbulent Odyssey that Shocked the World

The Boeing 720 was Boeing's only passenger aircraft that didn't follow the 7x7 format of their other aircraft. The 720 was actually a modified 707, designed to carry fewer passengers on shorter routes to smaller airports. Differences from the 707 included a fuselage 2.5 meters shorter, a redesigned wing, a lighter basic weight, and, after the first few months of production, a new set of Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines that produced significantly more thrust.
