Filling out a check (cheque) correctly is important to ensure that the payment is processed accurately. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to fill out a check:

*1. Date:*
Write the date in the top right-hand corner of the check. Use the current date or a future date if you want to post-date the check.

*2. Payee (Recipient's Name):*
Write the name of the person or organization you are paying on the "Pay to the order of" line. Be sure to use their full legal name, as it appears on their bank account. If you're unsure, ask the payee how they want their name written.

*3. Amount in Numeric Form:*
In the box next to the payee's name, write the numerical amount of the check using dollars and cents. Make sure to:
Start at the left edge to prevent tampering.
Use commas to separate thousands (e.g., $1,000.00).
Use a period (.) to indicate the decimal point (if there are cents).

*4. Amount in Written Form (Legal Line):*
Write out the same amount in words on the line below the payee's name. Be sure to:
Start with the dollar amount in words.
Use "and" before writing the cents.
Add "cents" after the cents amount.
Draw a line from the end of the written amount to the word "Dollars" to prevent alterations.

*5. Memo (Optional):*
In the memo or "For" field, you can write a note or description of the purpose of the payment. This step is optional but can be useful for record-keeping.

*6. Signature:*
Sign your name in the bottom right-hand corner of the check. Your signature should match the signature on file with your bank.

*7. MICR Line:*
The MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) line contains the check number, your bank's routing number, and your account number. This information is pre-printed on the check, and you don't need to fill it out.

*8. Check Number:*
The check number is usually located in the top right-hand corner and is used for tracking purposes. Make sure it matches the check number printed on the stub.

*9. Keep a Record:*
It's a good practice to keep a record of the check you've written, including the payee, date, and amount, in your checkbook register or another record-keeping system.

*10. Delivery:*
Give the filled-out check to the payee, or follow your bank's instructions for depositing or mailing the check.
