One of our big challenges in responding to Climate Change is decarbonising our buildings, and one of our main solutions in tackling this challenge is to electrify our homes and particularly our heating systems. My conclusion to delivering that electrification of heat is to install heat pumps, air to water heat pumps that are a like for like replacement for gas boilers. But there is another way of heating using electricity, and displacing gas use, that could be part of the story and that is to use air to air heat pumps that we more commonly know as air conditioning systems.

The bonus of air conditioning systems is that they can help with cooling during the summer months. In our cities, as our climate continues to change, and extreme weather becomes more prevalent, having comfort cooling could be really helpful, and reduce the worst of the health impacts of overheating on the hottest days.

So, we should encourage air to air heat pumps to heat homes in winter and cool them in summer... right?

Well I am not sure it is that simple. So in this video, I talk through the why's and the why not's of air to air heat pumps.
