The pros and cons of electric water heaters: pretty simple. Electric water heaters make water by electricity. They last a little bit longer than a gas water heater. In the northeast, they don't lost as long as they would down south, like in Florida. The average lifespan of a water heater in the northeast is between and between seven and 11 years. In the south and down in Florida, you can probably get about 15 to 17 years of life. They are not made for recovery. If you have a large tub or a large load of laundry, they'll use whatever water's in the tank, then they have to recover.

Pros and cons of gas water heaters: Gas water heaters are great for recovery. If you have a large tub that needs to be filled, gas water heaters fill up and get hot faster than an electric water heater. They have a lifespan in the northeast, again, probably around seven or eight years. Very rarely do I see them go over 10, they tend to leak.
