FILM ONE ABOUT THE PAVILIONS EXHIBITION
COMMISSIONED BY REUBEN LENKIEWICZ
“BE AMAZED BY WHAT YOU SEE “.

Commissioned By Reuben Lenkiewicz

This is a short film about the exhibition shown at The Teignmouth Pavilions “A Feast For The Eyes”.

The show was open for two months and consisted of paintings from The Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery and some private works from models and friends of Robert Lenkiewicz.

Curated and hosted by Reuben Lenkiewicz the son of the artist and manager of The Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery in the Teignmouth Arts Quarter.

As well as the exhibition the reception included a number of special guests.

Reuben invited models who posed for Robert Lenkiewicz to the event and suggested they bring a small painting or drawing if they wished.

Amongst the many thousands of people who sat for Robert Lenkiewicz over the years Robert painted many famous people including the Queen. Robert also painted Billy Connolly, Terry Waite, Ruby Wax, Dawn French and Micheal Foot.

The Tv and Radio Presenter Judi Spiers was also painted along with the irrepressible Gus Honeybun. Robert asked Judi when he was working on a Education Project and it was suggested Gus Honeybun had a educational position for small children.

Reuben said,
“Judi Spiers was a star and remembered Robert with affection. So supportive and generous. When I asked her to come to the reception she very kindly said yes. Judi also brought Gus with her and gave a wonderful talk about her memories of posing for Robert”.

Reuben said, “Gus Honeybun was very enthusiastic and happy to take a break from Dartmoor where he now lives with his family”.

Gus said,
“I was greatly impressed by Mr Lenkiewicz. I admired Roberts paintings and Robert admired my wisdom. He often came to visit me for advice”.

Reuben also invited Steven Barrett a long standing friend of Robert Lenkiewicz to give a talk about his memoirs of the artist.

Other guests included Mike Alsford a photographer who has his documentary photographs of Robert Lenkiewicz’s Barbican Studio in the exhibition. Also Cllr Robert Phipps Teignmouth Deputy Mayor introduced the speakers.

This was a fascinating opportunity to find out more about Robert Lenkiewicz a unique and extraordinary artist.

The evening included a extensive selection of paintings by Robert Lenkiewicz with a collective value of quarter of a million pounds.

Over 120 people came to the Lenkiewicz Reception at The Pavilions and 1000’s of visitors will have viewed the exhibition over over this summer. It ends on the 16th July.

Many of the guests brought their own smaller paintings and drawings which had never been seen in public. People coming from as far as Liverpool London and Cornwall.

Reuben also brought a number of paintings from his own family collection.
As well as 30 works from his Art Gallery in The Teignmouth Arts Quarter.

Reuben said,
“I am very happy with this event the size of the turn out proves Teignmouth is a town which appreciates fine art and is
happy to take Robert Lenkiewicz to its heart”.

Reuben said about this exhibition,
”I have selected from my art gallery in Teignmouth paintings showing Robert’s passion for expressing love, beauty, and sensuality through art.

I also wanted to show Robert’s unrivalled technical ability in painting.
This is shown in the three extraordinary self portraits on show. We have a particularly unique self portrait painted by Robert when he was 15 years of age”.

Reuben said,
“Robert’s artistic genius is in some ways still a closely kept secret held by those in the southwest and those that are passionate about him. But it is my conviction that this will change and is changing. True genius is rarely recognised in an artists lifetime. When a unique artist is so far ahead of the times he or she lives in it can take decades for the establishment to catch up”.

“The reception and exhibition was an opportunity for the people of Teignmouth and the tourists who visit the town to be introduced to the paintings of Robert Lenkiewicz.

It is also a opportunity for Roberts legacy to be brought to more people.
For example I have commissioned a film from Luke Abbott the director of King-Collins Productions about my experience of Teignmouth.

It will be about the future of Teignmouth and the importance of the arts to its economic and cultural life.

This exhibition and my Art Gallery will be part of the film including interviews with Judi Spiers and the models. But it will also show the development of my Art Gallery within the community. This is to show how the economic success of a community is completely dependent on the strength of its artistic culture.
