For our mini-moon (mini honeymoon), Amelia and i went for a short trip in Bali, out of the 6 days we went out to go fishing for a full day with Hooked Bali to hunt for Giant Trevally.

The method of fishing we did was known as popping. Popping in fishing refers to a technique primarily used in topwater fishing to attract predatory fish. Anglers use specialized lures, known as poppers, which are designed to create surface disturbance and noise when retrieved. These lures typically feature a concave or cupped face, allowing them to "pop" or splash water upon retrieval. The action mimics the sound of distressed prey, such as injured baitfish or insects, enticing fish lurking beneath the water's surface.

Anglers employ a rhythmic jerking or popping motion with their fishing rod to impart the desired action to the lure. This technique is particularly effective for species like bass, pike, and muskellunge that are known to strike aggressively at surface disturbances. Popping is a visual and auditory stimulus, triggering the predatory instincts of fish and prompting them to strike the lure. Successful implementation of popping requires understanding the specific behavior and preferences of the target species, as well as adapting the technique to the prevailing fishing conditions.

Hooked Bali is a popular fishing charter in Bali and they highly specialize in hunting predatory fish on top water (known as popping). Their primary business hunts for the elusive Giant Trevally in Nusa Penida and in the remote island, Komodo island National Park. They are an experienced team with a very professional crew who will help their customers catch Fish.

The spot we went to was Nusa Penida. We went around this huge island, targeting reefs & small islands. Nusa Penida, an island southeast of Bali, Indonesia, is renowned for its stunning underwater landscapes and vibrant coral reefs. The reefs around Nusa Penida are part of the Coral Triangle, an area recognized for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Its reefs are teeming with diverse marine life. The area is home to a vast array of colorful corals, including hard and soft corals, as well as a plethora of marine species such as tropical fish, rays, sharks, and turtles. The Mola Mola, or sunfish, is a notable seasonal visitor that attracts divers from around the world.

The waters around Nusa Penida can experience strong currents, especially at certain dive sites. Divers should be experienced and mindful of the prevailing conditions. Many sites are suitable for both beginner and advanced divers, with varying depths to accommodate different skill levels.
