Topiwala National Medical College was founded on 4th september 1921 by Dr DD Sathe ,Dr Bhadkamkar ,Dr Deshmukh ,Dr Anandrao Nair of powell and company.It was the first medical college by Indians for Indians.These four bravehearted doctors wanted to be free from British rule and wanted to contribute to National Non-coperation movement in 1920.They quit Grant Medical College as it was under British Rule and started National Medical College in a small bungalow in second victoria cross lane road.It was a struggle to survive British opposition ,fight for freedom.Initial 25 years National Medical Collge and Bai Yamunabai Nair hospital survived on donations especially by Dr Anandrao Nair who donated their land and money for establishing hospital for poor and needy.The treatment was free completely.During the time of world war ,there was immense financial crisis which was ably handled by Dr Venkatrao .In 1945 ,M.N .Desai Topiwala donated 5 lakh rs .Since then it became Topiwala National Medical College.In 1946,during silver jubilee year ,powerful Bombay Municipal corporation took over the institute and guaranteed its permanency.There has been no looking back for this institue since then.Very early in its journey Nair hospital started superspeciality departments.Every year the institute keeps growing.Humungous services provided by Nair Hospital during covid times will be written in Golden letter.Nair hospital history is a Saga of achievement against all obstacles.Dedicated to all Nairites......
