He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 22, 1943, and began playing the guitar at a young age. Benson's music is known for its blend of jazz, pop, and R&B, and he has had numerous hit songs and albums throughout his career.

Benson first gained attention as a guitarist in the 1960s, playing with jazz legends such as Miles Davis and Jack McDuff. He later began to focus on his singing as well and had his first major hit in 1976 with the song "This Masquerade." Other hit songs followed, including "Breezin'," "Give Me the Night," and "On Broadway," which won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance.

Benson has also collaborated with many other musicians over the years, including Chet Atkins, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones. He has won a total of 10 Grammy Awards over the course of his career, including Record of the Year for "Breezin'" in 1977 and Best Traditional R&B Performance for "God Bless the Child" in 2007.
