Today I turn a hollow form using a piece of Spalted Silky Oak which I roughed out a couple months ago (and ran out of time to make something out of it!). The timber was quite soft compared to other native timbers I have turned, which made it very easy to hollow out. Silky Oak is an Australian native hardwood, which was traditionally used for construction and window frames, however is now mostly used for turned items and furniture. Spalting is a kind of fungal/mould growth that grows in the grain of timber after it has been saturated with water (usually after the tree has fallen over in a storm). Although the spalting softens the timber, it can act as a nice feature.
