Viet Cong Laughed At Australia’s 2-Battalion Task Force, Until Nui Dat Locked Down Phuoc Tuy

Phuoc Tuy Province and Nui Dat hold significant meaning for Australian Vietnam veterans. More Australian soldiers were stationed in Phuoc Tuy than anywhere else in Vietnam. While they operated across Phuoc Tuy and sometimes in nearby areas, their main base was at Nui Dat, located in the heart of the province. It is true that members of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam served throughout South Vietnam. The first Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, was based in Bien Hoa during nineteen sixty-five and nineteen sixty-six. However, from nineteen sixty-six until their withdrawal at the end of nineteen seventy-one, a total of fifteen Australian infantry battalions, along with supporting services, were active in Phuoc Tuy. The Australian Logistic Support Group and the helicopters of Number nine Squadron Royal Australian Air Force were based at Vung Tau, which is nearby. While they were not located within Phuoc Tuy, some elements were deployed to Nui Dat, and the helicopters operated throughout the province. This raises questions about why Phuoc Tuy was selected for Australian operations. Why was the first Australian Task Force based at Nui Dat? And who made the decision to place it there? The answer to the last question is straightforward. It was Lieutenant General Sir John Wilton, the chief of the general staff. The next question is about the reasons behind Wilton’s decision. It will also look into why Australia opted for a two-battalion task force rather than a more balanced three-battalion approach in Vietnam in nineteen sixty-six.
