Part 3 of the Earth, Water, Fire Seminar Series

Increasingly, federally protected lands are the subject of court decisions that threaten fragile natural areas such as Bears Ears National Monument and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Industry seeks to open our valuable parcels of public lands for mineral extraction by escalating lease authorizations and shifting land management from the federal government to state governments. These decisions are often met by strong local and public opposition and legal challenges. This push towards privatization, combined with an increase in political power from extractive industries, has led to a period of uncertainty in federal land management.
