'Quhat mightie motione' is a poem, originally called 'A late regrate of leirning to love', by Captain Alexander Montgomery (1540?-1610?), a distant cousin of King James VI of Scotland, who called him “the maister poet”. The words of 'Quhat mightie motione' and other poems by Alexander Montgomery reappear with four part vocal music in Thomas Wode’s partbooks, c. 1562-1590. The line in the second verse, “No cataplasme can well impesh that pest”, means ‘No poultice can properly prevent that pest’.

The bray harp part for the song was created by the performer, Ian Pittaway.
