Pixel 7 is using Samsung ISOCELL GN1 While Pixel 7a is using Sony IMX787. Samsung ISOCELL GN1 is a 50 mega pixel sensor with 1/1.31 inch sensor and Sony IMX787 is a 64 megapixel with a smaller 1/1.73 inch sensor. Pixel 7 West released first Around October of last year, well, Pixel 7a was release this year, early May of 2023. I wouldn't say Pixel 7a is a midrange phone, its like a marketing strategy of Google making the flagship of last year more affordable by cutting some corners before releasing the new series. Pixel 8.

Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a have the same design and build quality. Although the materials used on Pixel 7 is more premium than 7a. Pixel 7 is using Corning Gorilla Glass Victus while Pixel 7a has the older Gorilla Glass 3 although from a protection standpoint both will do well everyday. There's also water and dust resistance for both but Pixel 7 is IP68 while Pixel 7a is only IP67.
