(27 Aug 2018) American Jesuits have documented several public appearances by ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick when he was purportedly under sanction for sexual misconduct by Pope Benedict XVI, complicating a key element of the bombshell accusation of abuse cover-up against Pope Francis.
Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano's accusations, that Francis effectively freed McCarrick of those sanctions in 2013 despite knowing his sexual predations against seminarians, have thrown Francis' papacy into crisis.
But the key questions to be answered is what sanctions, if any, Benedict imposed on McCarrick _ why they weren't enforced given his very public ministry at the time _ and what, if anything Francis did to alter them?
Father Matt Malone, editor-in-chief of AmericaMagazine, a Catholic publication based in New York, also wants these questions answered.
Following Archbishop Vigano's accusations, Malone began looking into McCarrick's public activities around the time he was sanctioned. "There were countless occasions in which Cardinal McCarrick appeared in public, celebrating Mass, preaching, taking part in public events," he said.
Malone did a 13-take Twitter feed Sunday night documenting all the times McCarrick was in public, despite allegedly being under sanction.
Malone says he wishes the Vatican would be more transparent in its response to the allegations.
Pope Francis has said he "won't say a word about" Vigano's allegations.
"My hope is that that the church and those in positions of leadership will get ahead of the story and put it together and put it out before they are forced to," Malone said.
