Hate Speech is one of the biggest problems when it comes to online forums and the internet in general. It can stoke the flames of offline violence, and could well have been a contributing factor to things like the January 6th Insurrection in the States. Natural Language Processing is a possible, powerful tool for combating this, but how does it work? In this talk I go over the common algorithms used, how content moderation works, and what some of the pitfalls you may experience when performing it.

Joe Davies is a PhD candidate at Queen Mary University, studying Particle Physics with a focus in Artificial Intelligence techniques. Over the course of his PhD he has co-authored literature about using AI to find Dark Matter, utilised clustering techniques to allow companies to advertise better, and has been part of a start u that received acclaim for being one of the best new products for hate speech detection and content moderation. He likes to cook, read and skate in his spare time, but would prefer it if you didn't ask how many times he's fallen off his board!
