What is a carillon?
No two carillons are the same. But, they are all made of big bronze bells, some of them taller than a person. Most carillons use around 50 bells, all connected to an organ-style double keyboard through a web of criss-crossing mechanical wires, levers, and springs. The oldest carillons are in 500-year old church towers in Belgium and The Netherlands. The largest are in North America, weigh over 100,000 pounds, and can be heard for miles in all directions.

Technical definition: a musical instrument composed of 23 or more tuned bronze bells connected to a double keyboard that allows expression through variation of touch via manual batons and foot pedals.

Tom Gurin has performed on over 60 carillons around Europe and North America, and is an active carillon composer and performer. He is Duke University Chapel Carillonneur in Durham, North Carolina and a frequent recitalist at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh. He is also in demand as a freelance performer, recently performing guest concerts at Princeton University, First United Methodist Church of Germantown, and more. He has collaborated with contemporary composers based in Europe and the U.S., including a recent project with NYC-based composer David Cieri.

Gurin graduated “With Great Distinction” from the Royal Carillon School of Belgium as a United States Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation. He chaired the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs from 2017-18 and has been a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 2017.
