Dance can be a powerful tool to make sense of the uncertainties of life. Both of us await life-changing transitions in the near future. It was the gift of dance that anchored us, assured us, prepared us for this change. ‘Kathak’, which translates to “storytelling”, finds expression of the intricacies of human emotions through extensive footwork, elaborate hand movements or ‘mudras’, and body movements. ‘Bollywood’ dance style on the other hand, is a more contemporary concept that incorporates elements of dance and expression from various forms such as Indian classical, Hip-Hop, Arabic, Bhangra, etc. The confluence of the two is what gave rise to the choreography of Pasoori. We were surprised at how effortlessly these stylistic differences would mold into one another to conceive something that transcends barriers and communicates the soul of Pasoori in the most authentic way we could. Pasoori, and by extension all of Ali Sethi’s music, compelled us to add our own energies to this beautiful track. Rutvi, my friend, my confidant, my constant support and now, my dance partner, it wouldn’t have been possible without you! I am so glad we have this as proof of how strong our friendship is, that we found a common language to convey our spirit to the world, through dance. Aalap, thank you so much for giving face to our imagination.
