In 2020, Chuuk, currently a state of the Federated States of Micronesia is scheduled to have a referendum on independece. The referendum has already been delayed twice, but if it goes ahead, it could have global ramifications.
FSM is in a compact of free association with the United States of America.
If Chuuk becomes independent, and does not reach another agreement with the USA, will Chuuk present an option for China to further its Pacific islands plan? Or will another nation like Taiwan, Australia or New Zealand step in?
