Jharia in Jharkhand, India is known as the "Burning City" because of a coal field fire that has been burning underground for almost a century. The first fire was detected in 1916

The fire has had devastating consequences for the local population, including: Ground instability, Cracked and crumbling walls, Chronic respiratory diseases, and Injuries and deaths

The fire has also displaced or endangered the health of hundreds of thousands of people. In recent decades, open-cast mining has brought the flames to the surface.
