In this episode of Al Mayadeen's The Proximate Aspect, Sam Torabi, Iranian international relations expert and director of the Risalat Strategic Studies Institute in Qom, explains the root of Iran’s economic challenges: outdated post-war subsidy policies that created opportunities for corruption from the producers' side.

He describes how past systems allowed producers to exploit lower-than-market exchange rates for personal gain, rather than supplying goods at lower prices to the public.

The current government, Torabi notes, is shifting subsidies directly to consumers, reducing the possibility of corruption, thus facing resistance from those accustomed to the old system.

"This is a normal situation or a situation that could happen in any country and has happened in many countries," he says.

However, he adds, "The difference in Iran is that any time we want to do something in Iran, the Americans, the Israelis are sitting, they're watching. They want to use that as an excuse to then cause the riots, to cause disruption."
