BLACK STAR CANYON Hike to Waterfall

The Black Star Canyon Falls hike is a favorite for a lot of locals in Orange County. This trail is part of the Black Star Canyon Wilderness Park by OC Parks. 🙂

This trail is a childhood favorite of mine, I'd always go there with friends growing up as we always would read stories online of the canyon being home to the KKK, satanic cults, evil spirits & black star resident... Black Star Bill!

First half of this hike is on a dirt road that is very comfortable to trek across. The second part to this hike that leads to the falls is a little tougher. Definitely one of the harder hikes I've been on due to the big boulders you'll have to start climbing over in order to reach the waterfall.

If it is raining, don't expect to be doing this hike. You will get soaked, and get your shoes all muddy. Be careful of the poison oak as well when you are trekking up the creek to reach the falls.

A little back story to this area.
The canyon is named after the Black Star Coal Mining Company, which opened a mine at the mouth of the canyon in 1877, but shut down in the early 1900s. The lower tunnel in the falls is actually an old mine shaft. In 1899 Black Star Canyon was the scene of another murder, this time as a result of friction between Mexican and Anglo-American homesteaders. All of these killings have given Black Star Canyon the reputation for being haunted.
