STORYLINE:
President Faustin Archange Touadera cast his vote in the Central African Republic presidential and legislative elections Sunday morning.

He said after casting his vote that he hoped the election would “allow our country to develop, to allow our country to find peace again, security.”

He is expected to win a third term after a 2023 referendum removed term limits and after trying to stabilize the country with the help of Russian mercenaries.

Touadera is one of Russia’s closest allies in Africa and analysts say a Touadera win would likely consolidate Russia's security and economic interests in the country even as Moscow faces growing scrutiny over its mercenaries' roles in Africa.

The Central African Republic is among the first in Africa to welcome Russia-backed forces, with Moscow seeking to help protect authorities and fight armed groups.

Some 2.4 million voters are registered to vote in Sunday's national elections which include the presidential, legislative, regional as well as local elections being held for the first time in decades.

Touadera faces a challenge from six candidates, including former prime ministers Anicet-Georges Dologuele and Henri-Marie Dondra, the most prominent opposition figures.

Analysts say the incumbent is a clear favorite after consolidating his control of state institutions in recent years.
