Hi everyone, let’s unframe Pygmalion and Galatea by the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, painted around 1890.

Pygmalion was a sculptor who lived in Cyprus. He was a man of great skill, devoted entirely to his art. But over time, he became disappointed with the people around him — he thought real women were flawed, unkind, or insincere. So, he decided he would never marry and instead focused all his energy on his craft.

One day, Pygmalion began carving a statue of a woman from ivory. As he shaped her features, he poured into the sculpture everything he imagined perfect beauty should be. When he finished, she looked so lifelike that it was hard to believe she was made of stone. He named her Galatea.

Soon, Pygmalion found himself drawn to his creation in a way he hadn’t expected. He dressed her in fine clothes, brought her jewels and flowers, and spoke to her softly, as though she could hear him. Though he knew she was only a statue, he couldn’t help but love her.

During a festival devoted to the goddess Aphrodite, Pygmalion prayed sincerely that he might find a woman as wonderful as his ivory figure — or, if the gods would allow it, that Galatea herself might come to life. Moved by his devotion, Aphrodite granted his wish.

When Pygmalion returned home, he kissed the statue, and for the first time, the lips felt warm. The ivory softened beneath his touch, and Galatea opened her eyes. She was alive. Overwhelmed with joy, Pygmalion thanked Aphrodite and embraced the woman who had once been only a dream.

In time, Galatea became his wife, and together they lived a blessed life, said to be full of the same beauty and love that first brought her into being.
