Are Shipping Container Homes Legal?

Shipping container homes are ideal for the minimalist contemporary aesthetic.

Currently no states prohibit the use of shipping containers as homes, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t restrictions.

As consumers are frustrated by high housing prices, new home building delays, and lack of housing inventory, they’re open to considering alternative living spaces like durable, low-maintenance eco-container homes.

Not only are containers cheaper to ship across country than traditional building materials, they can include pre-fab features like spray-foam insulation and energy-efficient windows.

Then there are land costs, which have risen exponentially since 2020 from an average low cost of $3,100 per acre to as much as $12,000 per acre today.

If the lot or parcel of land you purchase hasn’t already been cleared, you’ll need to consult with local land clearing firms to tell you what steps are needed prepare your lot for occupancy.

Additional costs can vary widely depending on what it will take to access the property, test the soil, and eventually clear the property and level the site for laying your foundation.
