"Virginia now has its first female governor-elect. Former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger has won the race, defeating the Republican, the incumbent Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who was looking to make history of her own. She would have been the first female Black governor anywhere in America. Spanberger has a very interesting background. She's a former CIA case officer who served undercover overseas, became a businesswoman, and then ran for and won a House seat that was part of the wave that allowed Democrats to take House control in 2018. They are looking to replicate what she helped lead that. She is more of a centrist Democrats. She is not of that progressive wing that Democrats have been paying a lot of attention to lately, and some Democrats are hoping that can kind of set a pattern for them to retake the House next year. As for Winsome Earle-Sears, she never got Donald Trump's backing. He did not endorse her. He did not even say her name during a tele-rall last night for that race. So Abigail Spanberger now wins the Virginia governor's race in what was essentially a referendum of sorts on the first Trump administration's nine months."

STORYLINE:
Former congresswoman Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who was outraised by the Democrat and failed to earn the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

The win flips control of the commonwealth’s governor’s mansion. While local issues and the biographies of the candidates played a strong role in the race, the results also reflect a contest where Trump’s presence loomed.

Virginia has a concentration of federal workers in the north and has deeply felt both the impact of the president cutting the workforce and of the government shutdown.

Virginia was one of two states, along with New Jersey, where voters were picking a governor on Tuesday. Voters were also selecting a new mayor in New York City, and in California, were deciding whether to approve a new congressional map that is designed to help Democrats win five more U.S. House seats in next year’s midterm elections.
