What do barley, a farm near Red Deer, and the phrase “craft beer is going to save the world” have in common? Matt Hamill, president of Alberta's Red Shed Malting, ties it all together with a grassroots approach to value-added farming.

Speaking from FarmVoice in Calgary, Hamill shares how Red Shed was born out of a shift in Alberta’s minimum production laws and a lightbulb moment during a brewery tour. “We saw some bags there that were from Germany and the UK… and no one was making specialty malt in Canada,” he says.

The result? A family-run craft malting business that grows, malts, and sells barley to brewers and distillers across Western Canada. And yes—beer really might be saving the world: craft brews use up to seven times more barley than light lagers, Hamill says, making them a win for soil health and crop rotation.

On the marketing side, Hamill credits sister-in-law Daelyn Hamill for their authentic, transparent social media presence. Meanwhile, he’s on the road making connections, pint by pint.
