It’s the perfect time to chit potatoes! Now is the perfect time to start

Chitting basically just means sitting your potatoes in a light, dry place but away from direct sunlight whilst they sprout. It just gives them a bit of a head start in growing before you’re ready to plant them out. I’ll be growing mine in containers.

I place them in egg cartons as it holds them well, making sure the eyes are looking to the sky and them I just put them on a shelf in the kitchen. You can also put them on a windowsill as well. If you’ve any room with all the seedlings 😂

When you do this depends on whether you have first earlies, second earlies or maincrop potato.

First Early: Plant out Feb-June. When planted they take 10-12 weeks to get to harvest stage. These tend to be your new potato/salad pots types.

Second Early: Plant out March-May. These take around 14-16 weeks to mature.

Main Crop: Plant out mid - late April - May. These take around 15-22 weeks and will be ready around October time.These are your larger multipurpose potatoes great for baked potatoes, roast, mashing etc.
