Описание к видео Apollo 15 Part 8: Mobile Service Structure (MSS) Delivery and Setup (A Blender Animation)

The Mobile Service Structure (MSS), also known as the Arming Tower, provided access to the launch vehicle and spacecraft while the vehicle was on the launch pad and protected the vehicle from weather. It was moved to the launch pad shortly after the Mobile Launcher was rolled out to the pad. After the Mobile Launcher was placed on the launch pad, the Crawler retrieved the MSS from its parking place alongside the Crawlerway and took it to the pad where it was locked into place. The MSS remained in position around the launch vehicle until the day before the scheduled launch. The MSS was 402 feet tall and weighted 12 million lbs.
Prior to launch, explosive devices were installed in the launch vehicle. The MSS had five platforms in order to do this work. The explosives included the linear shaped charges that would separate the stages of the vehicle in flight, as well as flight termination explosives. It was safer to install the explosive at the remote launch pad rather than inside the VAB.

Platform 5: Access to the launch escape system (LES)

Platform 4: Access to the Command Module (CM) and Service Module (SM). This is where the CM blue coat was removed which exposed the shiny silver reflective tape underneath. At that point the Boost Plate Cover (BPC) was placed onto the CM in sections. The BPC protected the CM during launch and during escape tower jettison or actuation. The Particles and Fields sub-satellite was installed in the Service Module. The PFS was launched in lunar orbit to study the plasma, particle and magnetic field environment of the moon and to map the lunar gravity field.

Platform 3: Access to the SM/LM Adapter (SLA)
The Lunar Module (LM) sat inside the SLA. The LM reaction control system (RCS) plume shields were installed as well as the front gear plaque. When all work was completed inside the SLA, the temporary internal SLA platforms were removed.

Platforms 2 and 3: Used to access various parts of the launch vehicle. These platforms could be raised or lowered to where they were needed.

Modeling Notes:
Crawler: Made many but not all changes to make this crawler more 1960s. Changes include the blue color, removed the spray bars, changed the cab interior to a 1960s cab. Did not change the gridded flooring to diamond plate nor did I change the dual caliper brakes (should be single caliper). Note that when the crawler is stopped, the disk brakes should be stopped (it was easier to model it unrealistically).

Crew:
David Scott (CDR): 3rd and last spaceflight (Gemini 8, Apollo 9)
Alfred Worden (CMP): only spaceflight
James Irwin (LMP): only spaceflight
