Excellence in Care Ward Accreditation (WA) is a bespoke Nursing Quality assessment and Improvement Framework developed and introduced by the KGH Ward accreditation team. The aim of this project is to ensure the quality of care provision by clinical areas and to support the areas to fulfil this by strictly following the KGH Nursing and Midwifery Framework of Excellence strategy. It is our ambition to continue to use our Excellence in Care accreditation programme as a platform for continuous quality improvement to ensure KGH remains at the forefront of NHS trusts providing outstanding patient care.


Wards undertook a self-assessment against the standards prior to a series of unannounced visits, to assess them ‘independently’. The ratings are assessed and compared to give each ward a Bronze, Silver or Gold rating overall. Full accreditation reports are provided to each ward, and an accreditation folder to collect evidence for future assessments. Importantly, each ward is then supported to develop an improvement programme to address areas of concern identified through the Ward Accreditation process. The results of each visit are sent to the Heads of Nursing, Divisional Directors and Matrons, it is then expected that progress is managed through divisional governance meetings.


Each ward was reassessed three times in an 18 month period. Wards that are awarded ‘Gold’ status on three consecutive occasions have the opportunity to apply for ‘star’ status.
