I needed to perform a Herman Miller Aeron Armrest Repair when all of a sudden the armrest broke off my chair. As it turns out it had a broken armrest bolt. So I'm going to show you how to replace the armest bolt cheaply. I do not use OEM but instead, a 1/4"-28 x 2.5" grade 5 bolt from my home center because the cost of the armrest bolt assembly is too expensive for me.

This repair is really not that complicated but you'll probably want to take the armrest assembly off the chair before getting a bolt to ensure you get the proper size. I would recommend taking the thumbwheel to the home center to ensure you're getting the correct bolt. My local home centers did not have a 2.5" bolt so I had to go to a hardware store.

I would also recommend keeping track of how everything goes back together. I've included a still image of the parts in their correct alignment but there is a bear assembly on one side of the locking thumbwheel and a washer on the other side. If you do not get them back in the correct order the thumbwheel will not turn.

Ironically while writing this article, the other side's armrest just broke off shearing the bolt head also. It would appear the lifespan for these bolts for me is about 20 years!
