Whitacre's Sleep was initially inspired by the Robert Frost poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". However, the Frost literary estate would not grant permission for publication or performance. The lyrics to Whitacre's music were eventually written by his friend and poet Charles Anthony Silvestri utilising the structure of the Frost poem and incorporating key words like ‘sleep’, 'dark' and 'deep'.

This animated version of the music is a sympathetic attempt to capture the hypnagogic, weightless and mystical feel of the piece and the exquisite vocal performance of the vocal group VOCES8.
