HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. -- Officials in Blair County are ensuring children are protected by handling child abuse cases better.

An assistant district attorney asked county commissioners to apply for a grant to launch a child advocacy center, Tuesday.

Officials said if the county gets the $10,000 grant they plan to train a multidisciplinary investigative team specifically responsible for handling abuse cases.

"Many times these children need mental health counselling," said ADA from Blair County Jackie Atherton Bernard. "Just regular therapy with a therapist would be a way to identify those needs and then connect the family up with available services in the area."

Currently, there are 16 accredited centers in Pennsylvania including one in State College.

The county is to find out their grant status in June whether or not they are awarded the money.
