La Faute-sur-Mer is placed on a small strip of coastal land in the extreme south of the Vendée.

To the west, the town is bordered, for 8 kilometers, by an uninterrupted sandy beach ending in a space reserved for naturism. It has naturally become a small seaside resort.

To the east, it is bordered by the river Lay which separates it from the small port of L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer. Two bridges (one for pedestrians, one for cars) connect the two twin towns.

From south to north, you can divide the town into three zones:

to the south: the Pointe d'Arçay Biological Reserve (dunes and pines), which serves as a wintering site and stop for many migratory birds;
in the center: the village;
to the north: farmland and the lagoon of Belle-Henriette.
