This video shows the progression of the top chess engines throughout the last 30 years.

On the turn of 1990 chess engines generally could not compete against competent human players. As the decade progressed this began to change.

Some human strength perspective:
Expert = 2000
Master = 2200
Grandmaster = 2500
World Elite = 2700
All Time Highest = 2882

The current TCEC champions are indicated with a gold ring. (TCEC is the unofficial chess engine championships and is the most recognised chess engine tournament).

I obtained the ratings from various ratings websites such as CCRL, TCEC, CEGT and general research (e.g. looking at old forums and tests) but had to make compromises between these to keep engine's ratings consistent with each other.

I am aware there are some mistakes and I hope to make an improved and updated version soon with the newer style of my more recent videos, especially given the explosive rise of Stockfish 12 (NNUE) in recent months. However, I will give Stockfish 12 time to find itself before I commit.
