I wasn’t planning to start the video with a launch control, but this car just managed 3.1 seconds, and CONSISTENTLY! That’s faster than the pre-lci M3, #M4, the RS6 GT we tested recently, any new Aston Martin… HOW IS THIS CAR SO FAST?! The LCI has had a power bump sure, it’s now 530HP, and the same torque available over a wider band. But it seems to me like #BMWM are significantly under selling the real bump in power!
Now the M3 and M4 drop tops are the type of cars most purists roll their eyes at. But did you know it’s the most enduring series in the M3 history? We had it since first gen E30, E36, E46 and then E92 and F83 series were the folding hard top gens. And I think it’s been so successful despite being two clashing concepts, because #BMW customers love having both open air luxury and motorsport learning. It’s endured, and as we saw G series may be the greatest mix ever. Now our G series returns to classic soft top, and I think it’s better for it!
As for the M version, the basis is solid. All M4s are now Xdrive I the LCI, and why not? Found Xdrive to only be a benefit, and you can always switch to RWD mode via the esp. We get Adaptive M suspension, an impressive, 8 speed gearbox — and who can forget the epic 3.0 in line six engine!
As I said, the LCI Now has more power - now just 20 shy of the new CS with 530hp. The 3.7 secs was smashed by us, and I’ll discuss how much of that power and grip survives during the wet conditions in which I drove the car.
As well as the power, the LCI get new lights front and rear (but only the 4 series, 3er doesn’t benefit). We also get new wheels in silver finish, and black gloss logo bases.
And then, inside! We have big screen changes vs original pre LCI (and less vs the minor update that came in-between) But the rest sees quite a nip-tuck, with less buttons and lovely NEW VENTs paired with ambient lighting. The hugely improved BMW OS 8.5 M is still my favourite system to use, but the cherry on top is an all new steering wheel borrowed from M5 in part - worth the price of admission by itself.
Now let’s talk roof! This is a “Panel bow soft top” which is 40% lighter than last gen roof. It looks clean too, as it uses wider panel-like support elements rather than traditional metal top bows, creating a smoother appearance. And thanks to this folds more compactly than before in 18 secs, up to 31 mph.
Then, we come to the driving. I’ve never liked convertible’s in this segment, from any manufacturer. Let’s see if 10 days with the M4 convertible changes my mind!
