Emerging Drumline Teacher Training - Teaching written music

Описание к видео Emerging Drumline Teacher Training - Teaching written music

From our Summer '24 Emerging Drumline Teacher Training Cohort, this session focuses on showing our middle school drumline site directors, assistant directors, and teacher interns how to decode written music:

1. How to identify different types of notes and rests - Quarter, 8th, and 16th
2. How to label the counts associated with notes and rests
3. How to use "sticking counts" to teach sticking and rhythm at the same time

Additionally, this session explains how to find the best "learning tempo" for written drumline music by calculating 80% of the marked (target performance tempo) and use a metronome to keep the learning tempo consistent, working slowly enough to give students a chance to learn rhythms with accuracy in rhythm and sticking.

This session also explains how to apply musicianship and skills learned in drumline warmups to new music. Once percussion students know "what" they are playing - that is, the rhythm and sticking of their parts - they should create a list of goals of "how" to play the new music with the best application of musicianship and skills learned in drumline warmups.

Last, this session covers "the learning loop" - how to separate repetitions with an equal amount of "rest time" so students can remain comfortable during the learning process and focus on goals for learning. This "rest time" between repetitions also allows the teacher to offer suggestions to students without stopping the beat or the flow of the learning process, akin to how a personal trainer would motivate and communicate with their trainee while the trainee is doing workout reps and resting between sets.
