Roberto De Zerbi was officially introduced as Marseille's new head coach on Tuesday.

De Zerbi, who left Brighton after two seasons in charge, led the Premier League club to its highest ever top-flight finish of sixth, then to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

De Zerbi will replace Jean-Louis Gasset, who retired at the end of the French league season.

Since American owner Frank McCourt bought Marseille in 2016, the former powerhouse of French soccer has failed to find any form of stability, with a succession of coaches and crises that sometimes turned violent.

The club has changed coach 30 times since the beginning of the century, the highest total of any top-flight team in France in that period.

The 1993 Champions League winners missed out on European qualification this season after finishing eighth in the French league.

Marseille dominated domestic soccer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. they were the only French team to win the Champions League.

However, they haven’t won their own league since 2010.

Meanwhile, another arrival is expected at the French club as Manchester United are in advanced talks with Marseille over the sale of striker Mason Greenwood.

The 22 year-old forward, who has one senior cap for England, could be on his way to France after spending last season on loan with Spanish club Getafe, where he played 33 league matches and scored eight goals.

He has been linked with a number of other European clubs this summer, including Lazio and Juventus, but Marseille are now understood to be in pole position to sign him.

Greenwood was suspended by United on January 30th, 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

According to the Sun newspaper, Marseille fans have strongly protested against the prospect of Greenwood's arrival.

A popular Marseille fans forum has launched an online campaign asking the club not to go through with the transfer saying that “irreparable damage” would be caused to the club's values if the British player is bought.
